A day after India announces a deal for Foxconn to build a plant, Trump says Apple shouldn’t bring production to India. Since so much of Trump’s thinking revolves around trade, this could be another pressure tactic related to US-India trade talks (which he’d said are going well).

Trump’s recent comments—publicly announcing the India-Pakistan ceasefire, both-siding the crisis, ignoring the terror attack that triggered it, invoking Kashmir, and seemingly making light of it all—risk sparking a diplomatic crisis w/India that neither side could’ve expected.
Trump, in Riyadh, on his role in brokering the India-Pakistan ceasefire: “I said, ‘fellas, come on, let’s make a deal. Let’s do some trading. Let’s not trade nuclear missiles, let’s trade the things that you make so beautifully.’” MBS seen smiling as Trump said this.
Modi’s speech more or less confirmed what was presumed from the start: Talks between India and Pakistan on a “broader set of issues,” which the US claimed will follow the ceasefire, are a nonstarter. But wouldn’t rule out Trump personally offering to host talks in a 3rd country.
Notable that Modi repeated his longstanding position that “terror and talks cannot happen together,” but he also identified terrorism as one of the two issues (Pak-administered Kashmir being the other) that can be discussed in talks with Pakistan.
Trump said today that trade is a big reason why India and Pakistan stopped fighting. He’d said earlier that with the ceasefire, he’ll now expand trade with both. I wouldn’t be surprised if US officials used trade/tariffs as a pressure point during their mediation.
Trump: “I said, ‘come on. We’re gonna do a lot of trade with you guys. If you stop it [fighting] we’re doing trade, if you don’t stop it we’re not gonna do any trade.’”
First Rubio says India & Pakistan agreed to hold talks on “a broad set of issues,” which India will have little interest in. Then Trump says he wants to look at a “solution” for Kashmir, which India will surely reject (unless Trump wants to focus on Pak admin-Kashmir; unlikely).
