بكى الإمام السجاد (ع) على أبيه الحسين عشرين إلى أربعين سنة، وكان إذا قُدِّم له طعام أو ماء بكى حتى يمتزج بدموعه، فقيل له غلامه خوفًا عليه: "أما آن لحزنك أن ينقضي؟". بكى الإمام وقال: ويحك! إن يعقوب غاب عنه ابن واحد فابيضت عيناه من الحزن، وأنا رأيت أبي وأخي وسبعة عشر من أهل بيتي مقتولين حولي! إني لا أشرب ماءً إلا وذكرت عطش أبي الحسين وهو يقول: (اسقوني شربة من الماء) فقتلوه عطشانًا!!".
