قال ابن رجب رحمه الله : الإيثار في الشتاء للفقراء بما يدفع عنهم البرد له فضلٌ عظيم ، خرج صفوان بن سليم في ليلة باردة بالمدينة من المسجد فرأى رجلًا عاريًا فنزع ثوبه وكساه إياه ، فرأى بعض أهل الشام في منامه أن صفوان بن سليم دخل الجنة بقميص كساه، فقَدِم المدينة ، فقال: دُلوني على صفوان فأتاه فقصَّ عليه ما رأى. قال ابن سعدي رحمه الله : وعلامة الرحمة الموجودة في قلب العبد، أن يكون محبا لوصول الخير لكافة الخلق عموما، وللمؤمنين خصوصا، كارها حصول الشر والضرر عليهم. فبقدر هذه المحبة والكراهة تكون رحمته. [بهجة قلوب الأبرار (١٧٠)].
