In 1961, the Soviet Union targeted 130,000 people under its "anti-social parasitism" laws. While aimed at the homeless and vagrants, the law was also weaponized against dissidents and intellectuals whose writings got them blacklisted from normal careers. To dodge prosecution, many took low-effort menial jobs (like boiler room attendants or street sweepers) to protect their free time and keep writing.
