Любопытно, что еще в 1932—1934 гг. Эрнст Юнгер с холодным пафосом писал, что свобода и комфорт — это буржуазные ценности, и что все великое постигается через жертвы, боль и тотальную мобилизацию. Однако после проигранной войны писатель страдает через закрытые границы, недоступную французскую визу и невозможность поплавать в Средиземном море да половить бабочек и жуков на Лазурном берегу.
