On August 9, 2017, Dave DePoris was sitting at a cafe and working on his laptop when someone snatched it from him. Since Dave was a musician and the device had his work on it, he grabbed the door of the unidentified thief's car as it sped away. Dave was dragged about two blocks before being killed by the vehicle.

On August 8, 2019, Timothy Ray Haman was killed by a teenager. Timothy had recently relocated to the area and was helping his daughter move some furniture when Shannon Johnson, riding past on a bicycle, insulted Timothy. When Timothy responded, the youth turned around and approached the 41-year-old chef. Three other nearby bicyclists also approached to support Shannon, so Timothy tried to withdraw from the confrontat…

On August 8, 2017, Keith Howard Odom stopped his semi truck in a shopping center parking lot to repair a tire. He was approached by a young man who demanded his wallet and other valuables. After he turned them over, the 18-year-old Landry Carter took a step back and shot Keith in the abdomen, killing him.

On August 7, 2015, James Cecil Coulson was attacked in the early morning. James was opening the restaurant he owned when Alcon Sanders and Charles Owens arrived, demanded cash from the 65-year-old, and then shot him. James died at the scene, leaving behind 21 grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

On August 7, 2015, Heather Nicole Maples was found face-down on her bed with severe signs of trauma. Heather, who had recently been accepted into college, had been raped and strangled to death. DNA evidence and fingerprints in her blood tied the scene to an acquaintance named Brandon Bowling. Investigators later discovered that Brandon had taken video of the crime, along with other sexual assaults.

On August 6, 2016, Calvin Michael Riley was taking a walk along the ocean shore when he was shot in the back by an unidentified young man, apparently at random. A friend of the 20-year-old Calvin, who was with him that evening, helped create a sketch of the shooter; he had been watching them from a distance and ran away after the attack.

On August 6, 2016, William Dawson was shot in the head. He and another man got into an argument at a bar, which continued outside. When William's son approached to defend him, the other man returned to the bar to get backup. Devin Carter followed him outside, came up behind William and shot him three times, killing him. He also shot William's son and the son's girlfriend several times.
