قال زيد بن ثابت: الزوج سيد في كتاب الله. وقرأ قوله تعالى: (وألفيا سيدها لدى الباب). وقال عمر بن الخطاب: النكاح رق، فلينظر أحدكم عند من يرق كريمته. وفي الترمذي وغيره عن النبي صلى الله عليه وسلم أنه قال: (استوصوا بالنساء خيرا فإنما هن عندكم عوان). فالمرأة عند زوجها تشبه الرقيق والأسير، فليس لها أن تخرج من منزله إلا بإذنه سواء أمرها أبوها أو أمها أو غير أبويها باتفاق الأئمة.
