مثلاً یک انسان خوب ممکن است امروز به تو محبت کند، فردا به دلیل مشکلات خودش کمتر توجه کند، یا حرفی بزند که ناخواسته ناراحتت کند. اگر حال تو کاملاً وابسته به رفتار او باشد، باز هم اختیار درونت را بیرون از خودت گذاشتهای.
تو را وارد دعوا کند؛
از تو واکنش احساسی بگیرد؛
بعد همان واکنش را علیه خودت استفاده کند؛
یا ذهن و آرامشت را برای مدت طولانی درگیر نگه دارد.
پس تمرین خودسازی این نیست که «هیچ چیزی ناراحتت نکند
بلکه این است که بین تحریک شدن و واکنش نشان دادن، یک فاصله ایجاد کنی.
بعضی آدمها با رفتار، حرف یا تحریکهایشان کاری میکنند که تو از تعادل خارج شوی؛ عصبانی شوی، ناراحت شوی یا واکنش تندی نشان بدهی. وقتی واکنش تو را به دست گرفتند، عملاً بخشی از کنترل خودت را در اختیار آنها گذاشتهای.
